• Overview

Ageing is a natural and gradual process, characterised by the loss of collagen and other tissues such as fat and bone density that begin to take place as early as the age of 22. There are different factors that will influence how our skin ages. Some of these are factors are intrinsic, over which we have no to little control for example our genetic make-up and chronological ageing. However, we can certainly influence the so-called extrinsic ageing factors – which describe the impact of the environment and other preventable factors, over which we have some control.

Therefore the focus should be on minimising extrinsic ageing factors which can otherwise result in damage to the skin and cause premature ageing. These include:

    • UV exposure – particularly UVA and HEV light exposure
    • Unhealthy habits – e.g.: smoking and drinking
    • Environmental exposure – pollution and hazardous occupations
    • Insufficient or low-quality sleep
    • Diet lacking of nutrients
    • Mental health disorders
  • Lifestyle recommendations

Avoiding unhealthy habits such as smoking and excessive drinking is the first course of action that one needs to implement to avoid premature ageing. Second, following a Mediterranean lifestyle, rich in plant-based foods and oily fish, frequent exercising, and living an active social life will significantly slow down the ageing process of the skin. Allowing yourself to unwind and rest to experience quality sleep is crucial, since two of the most potent antioxidants: melatonin and glutathione, are being produced during our sleep. These antioxidants have an ample effect on preventing collagen loss and maintaining a youthful complexion of the skin.

  • Aesthetic solutions and skincare ingredients

The best possible skincare ingredients for preventing ageing are alfa-hydroxy acids such as glycolic acid, growth factors, peptides, antioxidants and of course, retinol. Out of all, retinol is the most potent ingredient as it is the strongest antioxidant of all, prevents collagen degradation and accelerates cellular turnover, which are one of the major causes of aging. Ensure that you always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that you are comfortable to use in terms of texture, and add physical protection as well, such as hats and clothing with UV protection fibres. When it comes to anti-ageing treatments, opt for forms of biostimulation, including microneedling, radiofrequency and platelet rich plasma aka PRP.
